Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
