Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
